It is used to facilitate gas-liquid contact to improve mass transfer efficiency. Gas flows up through the riser and back down through the cover, down through the annular space between the riser and the cover, and finally through a series of openings into "slots" on the side of the liquid or cover tower. The unit has a built-in liquid seal to prevent liquid discharge at low gas rates.
